About Tony Boyd

After many years of playing in regional Australia, Tony made the move to Sydney in the late 80s and soon discovered his love of contemporary blues (SRV, Robben Ford, Robert Cray) and pursued like minded musicians while still working in the cover band scene. He soon became a regular in the Sydney blues scene working with the Matt Roberts Trio (of which he is still a member).

In 2006, Tony found a happy home in the Kate Lush Band playing a combination of blues, soul, Motown and New Orleans based original music while gigging and playing festivals around Australia. Tony has so far recorded four albums with Kate (Radio Captain, Blues, Let It Fly and Headline) and continues to this day as a member of the band.

In 2007 and for the next 7 years Tony also toured with Australian Blues Guitar Legend Mal Eastick. While in Memphis, TN with Mal Tony had the absolute treat to record six tracks in legendary recording studio “Sun Studios”.

In 2014 filled in with The Christina Crofts (hotshot slide guitarist) Band at short notice which became a long-term association. He recorded Christina’s EP “Like We Used To”, and later appeared on the album “Just How Love Feels”.

In 2014 Tony began his friendship and musical partnership with extraordinary blues/rock guitarist/singer Simon Kinny-Lewis. As a member of the SKL Band Tony recorded the bands first album ‘Bad Whiskey’. Tony has toured Brazil and the USA three times with Simon, the last two times recording the albums ‘A Day in San Jose’ and ‘Another Day in San Jose’ (featuring Robben Ford). The US tours have included gigs and recordings with long time Robben Ford/Ford Brothers Band bassist Dewyane Pate, piano and Hammond player Nate Ginsberg (Herbie Hancock, Graham Central Station) and Andy Just on harp (Ford Brother Band, Chris Cain and many others).

In 2018 Tony was chosen to be part of the rhythm section for an Australian tour with Blues/Metal superstar Eric Steckel. For Eric’s subsequent tour to Australia (2019) Tony was requested by Eric to play drums.

In 2019 Tony had the great pleasure to be in the rhythm section for the first Australian tour for contemporary blues great, Josh Smith.

During a tour in the US with Simon Kinny-Lewis (2019), Tony was asked by Eric Steckel to head down to Los Angeles to do a run of shows for Blues Promoter Cadillac Zac and four great shows were played with bass monster Travis
Carlton as part of the rhythm section.

In early 2020 Tony proudly hit the road in Europe with Eric Steckel and bassist Jos Kamps (The Netherlands). After a run of great shows everything ground to a halt due to COVID 19.

Tony returned to Australia and immediately went to work doing remote drum sessions. He has been kept busy doing albums for Brad Johns (Country Rock), Chris Davis Band (Blues Rock and straight out Rock), Simon Kinny-Lewis (Contemporary blues produced by Robben Ford and mixed by Grammy award winning engineer Casey Wasner, album ‘King Biscuit’ featuring Robben Ford, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher and others due for release late 2021) and Sharon Murray (Soul). Also recording new tracks for Kate Lush, Christina Crofts, Tony Cini and Ben Chakravorty.
